29% Say U.S. Heading in Right Direction

For the second week in a row, 29% of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending January 12.

That's down from 30% two weeks ago, the highest level of confidence since early September. In early October during the federal government shutdown, confidence in the country’s course fell to 13%, the lowest finding in five years. A year ago, 36% said the country was heading in the right direction.

The national telephone survey of 3,500 Likely Voters was conducted by Rasmussen Reports on January 6-12, 2014. Most Voters Still See Obama, Biden As Liberal

Most voters still have little doubt that President Obama and Vice President Biden are liberals.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of Likely U.S. Voters consider the president at least somewhat liberal in political terms, including 44% who believe he is Very Liberal. Twenty-one percent (21%) feel the president is politically moderate. Just seven percent (7%) consider Obama somewhat or Very Conservative. (To see survey question wording, click here).

30% Say U.S. Heading in Right Direction

Thirty percent (30%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending January 11. 

This finding is down three points from the week before which marked the highest level of optimism since April 2013. The number of voters who think the country is heading in the right direction was below 30% most weeks last year.

53% Rate Economic Growth As More Important Than Economic Fairness

President Obama has declared income equality to be his number one issue this year, but most voters continue to rate economic growth as more important than economic fairness. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 78% of Likely U.S. Voters believe that policies that encourage economic fairness are at least somewhat important, with 51% who think they are Very Important. Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrats 41%, Republicans 37%

Democrats have widened their lead over Republicans to four points on the latest Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending January 12 finds that 41% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Democrat in their district’s congressional race if the election were held today, while 37% would choose the Republican instead. This is the largest lead for the Democrat since early November 2013. The previous week, Democrats held a two-point lead - 40% to 38%.

56% Still View Health Care Law Unfavorably

The new national health care law remains unpopular with most voters who still want freedom of choice when it comes to how much health insurance coverage they carry.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 41% of Likely U.S. Voters rate the new law at least somewhat favorably, while 56% share an unfavorable opinion of it. This includes 15% with a Very Favorable view and nearly three times as many (42%) with a Very Unfavorable one. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The U.S. economy’s still not a pretty picture, but Americans seem to be going with the flow. The government at week’s end reported the weakest job growth in years in December. The unemployment rate fell, but that was largely due to Americans leaving the work force.

39% Support Building More U.S. Nuclear Power Plants, 37% Oppose

Voters remain lukewarm about building more nuclear power plants but stop short of calling for the closure of the plants already in existence.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of Likely U.S. Voters now think more nuclear power plants should be built in the United States. Thirty-seven (37%) are opposed to building new plants, while 23% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

8% Think Congress Doing a Good or Excellent Job

As Congress returns to Washington, its performance reviews remain in the cellar, and more voters than ever think it’s capable of making a bad situation worse.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters think Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Sixty-six percent (66%) rate its performance as poor, but that’s a noticeable improvement from 75% in November, Congress’ highest negative in seven years of regular surveying. 47% Say Obama's Too Hostile to Small Business

Voters are slightly less critical of how President Obama deals with small business issues but still think he's more likely to favor big businesses over small ones.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 35% of Likely U.S. Voters now give the president good or excellent ratings for his handling of issues related to small business, while 42% rate him poorly. That’s a slightly more positive rating than last month when 46% gave Obama poor marks in this area. But 40% gave the president positive marks for his handling of small business issues a year ago. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

33% Say U.S. Heading in Right Direction

Thirty-three percent (33%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending January 4. 

This finding is up three points from the week before and is the highest level of optimism since April 2013. The number of voters who think the country is heading in the right direction was below 30% most weeks last year.

Rasmussen Employment Index Hits Highest Level Since June

The Rasmussen Employment Index which measures worker confidence rose four points in December continuing the upward trend it began in November.

At 89.8, worker confidence is at its highest level since June but is still down five points from the all-time high of 94.4 in May of last year. The index hit a low for 2013 of 81.2 in October. It stood at 91.2 in December 2012.

Generally speaking, an increase in the Rasmussen Employment Index suggests the upcoming government report on job creation will be stronger than the prior month’s report.

Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrats 40%, Republicans 38%

Democrats have taken the lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the first time since late November.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending January 5 finds that 40% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Democrat in their district’s congressional race if the election were held today, while 38% would choose the Republican instead. The previous week, the two parties were tied at 40% apiece.

Coming off his reelection, President Obama signaled that immigration reform and stricter gun control were two of his top agenda items, but none of his initiatives in these areas made it into law. Voters remain critical of the president's handling of both issues.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 33% of Likely U.S. Voters give the president good or excellent marks when it comes to immigration issues, while 45% rate his performance in this area as poor. A year ago, Obama's positives in this area were 39%, and 37% rated him poor. His good or excellent ratings ran as high as 43% in late February, while his poor numbers peaked at 46% in July. 31% Expect Health Care To Improve Under New Law

Voters continue to give their own health care high marks but remain critical of the overall health care system in this country. For the first time in nearly a year, however, fewer than 50% expect the health care system to get worse under Obamacare.

Americans traditionally are more upbeat as the new year begins, but that optimism only goes so far.

Obama Monthly Approval in December Up Two Points From Recent Low

When tracking President Obama’s job approval on a daily basis, people sometimes get so caught up in the day-to-day fluctuations that they miss the bigger picture.  To look at the longer-term trends, Rasmussen Reports compiles the numbers on a full-month basis, and the results can be seen in the graphics below.  

The president’s total job approval rose two points to 47% in December. That’s up from 45% in November, the president’s lowest monthly approval in two years, but still down nine points from December 2012’s recent high of 56%. The president's rating took a hard hit in November from the problems surrounding the rollout of the new national health care law. Through much of November and early December, Obama’s daily job approval ratings were at the lowest levels of his entire presidency.
