Obama's Job Approval Up A Point in December

When tracking President Obama’s job approval on a daily basis, people sometimes get so caught up in the day-to-day fluctuations that they miss the bigger picture. To look at the longer-term trends, Rasmussen Reports compiles the numbers on a full-month basis, and the results can be seen in the graphics below.  

The president ended the year with a monthly job approval in December of 48%. That’s up a point from the previous three months but is one point shy of his high for the year of 49% in February and May. Obama’s monthly overall approval hit a two-year low of 45% in November 2013 during the troubled rollout of the new national health care law.

Daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night. The monthly numbers in this article are based on approximately 15,000 interviews each month with likely voters. The margin of sampling error is less than +/- 1 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

30% Say U.S. Heading in Right Direction

Thirty percent (30%) of Likely U.S. Voters think the country is heading in the right direction, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending December 28. 

This finding is up three points from the previous week and is the highest finding since early June. The number of voters who think the country is on the right course ranged from 23% to 27% nearly every week after that and has been below 30% most weeks since June of last year.

Generic Congressional Ballot: Democrats 39%, Republicans 39%

Democrats and Republicans are closing out 2014 tied on the Generic Congressional Ballot.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey for the week ending December 28 finds that 39% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Republican candidate in their district's congressional race if the election were held today, while the same number (39%) would choose the Democrat instead.

President Gets No Bounce from Improving Economy

A number of economic indicators suggest the economy is improving, but voters aren't giving President Obama any additional credit for that improvement.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of Likely U.S. Voters give the president good or excellent ratings for his handling of economic issues, little changed in regular surveys since November 2010. Few Have Bought Health Insurance Through New Exchanges

Voters end the year with little personal experience with the health insurance exchanges established under the new health care law.

Voters Still Give Congress Dismal Reviews

Even though they just voted in a new Republican majority, voters still give Congress dismal marks and the majority believe members get reelected because the system is rigged.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters rate Congress’s performance as good or excellent, unchanged from the last two months. Voters Have an Unfavorable View of the EPA

Fewer voters than ever have a favorable opinion of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a plurality say that its regulations and actions hurt the economy. 

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 32% of Likely U.S. Voters have a favorable opinion of the EPA, the lowest finding in the three years the question has been asked. Forty percent (40%) view the agency unfavorably, unchanged from June. Twenty-eight percent (28%) are undecided, the highest finding to date. (To see survey question wording, click here).

Voters Remain Strongly Pro-Choice When It Comes To Health Insurance

Most voters continue to hold a negative opinion of Obamacare and remain committed to the belief that consumers should have choices when it comes to health insurance. They also still strongly belief employers and individuals should be able to buy health insurance across state lines.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 42% of Likely U.S. Voters now have at least a somewhat favorable opinion of the national health care law, while 53% view it unfavorably. These findings are generally consistent with surveys since early 2013 and include 17% with a Very Favorable opinion and 38% with a Very Unfavorable one. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

More Voters View U.S. Economy As Fair

Voters are more positive about the fairness of the U.S. economy than they’ve been all year, although most continue to see it as unfair. They also continue to place high importance on making the system provide economic opportunity to all.

Forty-four percent (44%) of Likely U.S. Voters now view the U.S. economy as at least somewhat fair, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fifty-three percent (53%), however, think it is not fair. This includes just six percent (6%) who think the economy is Very Fair and 19% who say it is Not At All Fair. Most Still Expect Health Care System to Suffer Under Obamacare

Voters still strongly approve of the health care they are getting, but most also remain convinced that it will get worse under the new national health care law.

Voters continue to give mediocre reviews to America’s public schools and remain strongly pro-choice when it comes to things like uniforms, academic calendars and school prayer.
