Despite media fixation on the scream of the week, most Americans remain focused on the essentials, and their views on them are consistent over time, even if the Political Class continues to ignore them.
Take the auto bailouts. They’ve been unpopular since day one, and they’re still unpopular. Admittedly, thanks to the political spin out of Washington, the bailouts are a bit less unpopular because many Americans incorrectly believe the government made money or broke even on them. But when informed of the real price tag, opposition is just as high as ever.

Incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson now posts double-digit leads over all three of his Republican challengers in Florida’s 2012 U.S. Senate race.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Florida Voters shows Nelson with 47% support to 36% for Congressman Connie Mack, his leading GOP opponent. Ten percent (10%) like some other candidate in the race, and seven percent (7%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said publicly she’s not interested in being Mitt Romney’s running mate, but a lot of her fellow Republicans like her just the same.
With speculation running wild over who Romney will choose to run with him for the vice presidency, Rasmussen Reports is testing the waters for a number of prominent Republicans around the country. The latest national telephone survey finds that 66% of Likely U.S. Voters share at least a somewhat favorable opinion of Rice, with 32% who view her Very Favorably. Voters continue to have mixed feelings about Medicare, and most still aren't confident they'll get the benefits they're entitled to.
Forty-one percent (41%) of Likely U.S. Voters consider Medicare a good deal for working Americans, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. The bad news is that voters still overwhelmingly don’t trust what most politicians say. The good news is that they’re a bit more convinced that it’s not the politicians’ fault.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only eight percent (8%) of Likely U.S. Voters think most politicians keep their campaign promises. April 25, 201260% in New York City Approve of Mayor Bloomberg
New Yorkers generally like their three-term mayor, but they like President Obama even more.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in New York City finds that 60% at least somewhat approve of Michael Bloomberg, the city’s mayor for the past 10 years. Thirty-nine percent (39%) disapprove of the Republican mayor. These findings include 24% who Strongly Approve Bloomberg’s job performance and 17% who Strongly Disapprove. Most recently, it’s been anti-Obama comments by aging rock star Ted Nugent and anti-Romney remarks by an Obama political adviser on women’s issues, but candidates are routinely bombarded with media questions when someone who supports them steps out of line. However, voters overwhelmingly see those stories as media hype and believe it’s the candidate that really counts.
Seventy-nine percent (79%) of Likely U.S. Voters think in terms of how they will vote that what a candidate says is more important than what their supporters say. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 11% put more emphasis on what a candidate’s supporters say. Ten percent (10%) are not sure. Fifty percent (50%) of Likely U.S. Voters, in fact, think society would become less fair if the government got more involved in regulating the economy.
